Germany Halts Standard Shipments to the U.S. over Trump’s Tariffs

Similar measures have already been taken by the postal services in Belgium, Austria, and Denmark.

The German postal service announced temporary restrictions on deliveries to the United States due to the tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump, AFP reported.

DHL, the owner of Deutsche Post, said it would “temporarily suspend” the standard delivery service to the U.S. — the preferred option for many small businesses. “The reason for the restrictions, which we expect to be temporary, is the new postal delivery processes introduced by the U.S. authorities. Important questions remain unclear, including who will have to pay the tariffs and how,” the company said.

Similar measures have already been taken by the postal services in Belgium, Austria, and Denmark. DHL specified that the more expensive “express” service for shipments up to 70 kilograms remains in place. Individual customers will be able to send gifts with a maximum value of $100 (86 euros), but the company warned that they will be subject to additional checks to prevent their use for commercial purposes.

At the end of July, the Trump administration announced that as of August 29 it is removing the tax exemption for small shipments from abroad. Previously, shipments valued under 800 euros entered the country duty-free, but they will now be subject to a 15% levy — the same rate that applies to all European goods. This was agreed in a deal between Brussels and Washington late last month.

As early as April, DHL had suspended the delivery of shipments to the U.S. valued at over 800 euros. | BGNES
