Russian President Vladimir Putin and his allies "pose a fatal threat to the security, freedom, and prosperity of Romania, Europe, and America." This is stated in an open letter from seven former US ambassadors to Bucharest, representing both Democrats and Republicans.
"If Romania elects a pro-Putin president, US defense and economic support for ordinary Romanians could be seriously affected," the diplomats warn.
They emphasize that Romanians face an obvious historical choice: Russian domination or their own future as a US ally in NATO. "Putin or America," the ambassadors add.
Responding to the letter, the first deputy chairman of the PSD and Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, said that there should be no "aggression against voters" who do not accept this black-and-white view. He does not believe that if one of the candidates wins, we will leave the EU.
"I don't believe that. It is very difficult to leave the EU, even if there is an isolationist president, because the Romanian people do not want that. A referendum must be held," Grindeanu said. І BGNES
