Triumphant return for Sinner on home soil in Rome

The world number 1 won his first match after being on the sidelines due to three-month doping ban.

Jannik Sinner has qualified for the third round of the Rome Masters. On home soil, the world number 1 defeated Mariano Navone of Argentina 6-3, 6-4 in nearly an hour and 40 minutes of play, marking his perfect return to the court after a three-month doping ban.

Sinner had his difficulties in the match, but with the support of the audience he managed to cope. In the opening set, he made a single break, which was enough for him to succeed. In the game before the break, he had to save a break point against Navone. The second set was more contested, with Sinner getting a break in the seventh game, but this time his opponent returned it. However, the leader in the scheme made another break and then served successfully for a place in the next phase.

Sinner hit 21 winners, but also 24 unforced errors. He faces a match against Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands, who surprised Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Jakub Menšík, Francisco Cerundolo and Alex de Minaur advanced to the next round, but 12th seed Ben Shelton is out.

In the women's tournament, Naomi Osaka pulled off a comeback against Marie Boužková of the Czech Republic and will play in the round of 16 with Peyton Stearns, who surprised Australian Open champion Madison Keys. Elise Mertens of Belgium, meanwhile, eliminated third-seeded Jessica Pegula for a match with Diana Schneider. The other two clear 1/8 final pairs are Jasmine Paolini - Jelena Ostapenko and Elina Svitolina - Danielle Collins. | BGNES
