Riots Across Serbia: Party Offices Set on Fire, Stun Grenades and Tear Gas Used Against Protesters

After a series of incidents throughout the evening, shortly before midnight local time (1:00 a.m. Bulgarian time), the situation in Valjevo and Belgrade had calmed down.

A wave of protests swept through several Serbian cities—from Valjevo and Leskovac to New Belgrade and Gornji Milanovac. Thousands of citizens took to the streets against the regime of Aleksandar Vučić and the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). In some places, tensions escalated—with party offices set ablaze, clashes, and police cordons.

The first protest this evening began in Valjevo. Demonstrators gathered around 7:00 p.m. and marched toward the police headquarters, where gendarmerie units were stationed in the courtyard. The protest escalated as demonstrators broke into the entrance of the city hall building. Police intervened and pushed them back, after which a cordon blocked the street in front of the institution. Protesters began throwing stones and pyrotechnics at the police.

In the capital district of New Belgrade, demonstrators from Zemun joined the protesters and together marched to the headquarters of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), where they were met by a police cordon. Eyewitnesses reported explosions, likely from fireworks fired at the police. The police used tear gas and stun grenades, then stormed the area to disperse the citizens.

In Novi Sad, demonstrators threw paint and stones at the building of the Socialist Movement, while at the Serbian Radical Party offices they tore down the party flag and set it on fire.

In Leskovac, protesters reached the SNS building, but their path was blocked by a police cordon. The crowd declared they would wait for local party leaders to appear.

In Gornji Milanovac, several hundred people pelted SNS offices with toilet paper. A police cordon was also present there.

After a series of incidents throughout the evening, shortly before midnight local time (1:00 a.m. Bulgarian time), the situation in Valjevo and Belgrade had calmed down. In Novi Sad, following police intervention, there were also no riots at that moment.

In both cities, cameras of Serbian television N1 broadcast live the arrests of demonstrators. |BGNES
