Today’s edition is a jubilee, marking 60 years since the festival was established.
The participants were welcomed by Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. “The festival in Koprivshtitsa shows the spirit of the Bulgarian people,” he emphasized.
The festival was opened with songs by the famous Bulgarian folk singer Valya Balkanska, who performed the song “Izlel e Delyo Haydutin.” In the late 1970s, this song was sent as a message into space aboard the Voyager probe.
The festival is held every 5 years, except for the interruption during the COVID pandemic. This year, over 7,000 people are participating, including international guests.
The festival in Koprivshtitsa is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list. | BGNES
