Astronaut Jim Lovell dies at age 97

Lovell was a veteran of four space flights: Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13.

Astronaut Jim Lovell died on August 7 in Illinois at the age of 97, NBC reported.

Lovell was a veteran of four space flights: Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13.

Lovell's family recalled his "incredible life and professional achievements" and his "legendary leadership in pioneering space flights."

"But to all of us, he was a father, grandfather, and leader of our family. Most importantly, he was our hero. We will miss his unwavering optimism, his sense of humor, and the way he made each of us believe that we could achieve the impossible. He was truly one of a kind," said the astronaut's family. 

"NASA extends its condolences to the family of Captain Jim Lovell, whose life and work inspired millions of people over the decades. Jim's character and unwavering courage helped our nation reach the moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned a great deal. We mourn his passing even as we celebrate his achievements," said NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. | BGNES
