Charles Leclerc surprised everyone, including himself, by winning pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
After McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris dominated free practice, Leclerc, who was immediately behind them, took his chance and triumphed in today's qualifying, leaving Piastri and Norris behind in second and third respectively. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who recently announced that he is staying at Red Bull, is only eighth.
The top 10 also included George Russell (Mercedes), Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber), Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls).
"The most unexpected pole position of my career", admitted Leclerc, who navigated the difficult and windy conditions best, after the end of qualifying.
Meanwhile, the one who dropped out in the second qualifying session - Lewis Hamilton, Leclerc's teammate at Ferrari, did not hide his disappointment. "It's always me. I'm useless, absolutely useless. The team has no problem. You see that our car is in pole position. So we probably have to change the driver", said the seven-time world champion, referring to himself.
