American sprint star Sha'Carri Richardson has found herself in the spotlight again for unwanted reasons. She was arrested for domestic violence against her boyfriend Christian Coleman just before the US Track and Field Championships in Oregon this week.
Police in Washington State said the 25-year-old world women's 100m champion was arrested on Sunday night after she confronted Coleman while the pair were traveling from Seattle to Tacoma.
A report on Richardson's arrest, emailed to AFP by Seattle airport police, said security camera footage captured Richardson in a verbal altercation with Coleman as the pair emerged from security.
"Richardson followed and approached Coleman several times as he appeared to be trying to move away. Richardson then pushed Coleman hard enough to send him into a nearby line of scrimmage...she pushed Coleman again, hard enough to send him several feet away", the report states.
Richardson was then seen throwing headphones at Coleman, who refused to participate in the investigation and "refused to be a victim", the officer's report states.
Richardson was taken into custody and released Monday after the incident, which police described as domestic violence in the report.
News of Richardson's arrest came after USA Track and Field officials said she refused to run the 100 and 200 meters. However, USATF officials later confirmed that Richardson, who had already qualified for the 100m at the World Championships in Tokyo in September, had changed her mind and would now compete in the 200m this weekend.
"She initially told us she would not run the 200m, but she never officially withdrew. She has since informed us that she will now compete in the 200m", a USATF spokesman told AFP.
Richardson has once again been under the radar for a controversial moment. She didn't compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for marijuana after winning the US Trials. At the time, she had explained her use of the banned substance by saying she was grieving the death of her biological mother. | BGNES
