Marrit Steenbergen brought the Netherlands its first gold medal at this year's World Swimming Championships in Singapore. She defended her world title in the 100m freestyle with a time of 52.55 seconds.
Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan, who has three gold medals so far at the world championships, settled for silver (52.67), while the bronze went to Torri Huske of the United States - 52.89.
In other events, Great Britain triumphed in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay. Thanks to Duncan Scott, the British grabbed gold in a time of 6:59.84. This is the third consecutive global title for Great Britain in the discipline, after gold at the World Championships in Fukuoka in 2023 and at the Games in Paris last summer. China won the battle for silver with Australia, which overtook the USA at the end of the race.
Kate Douglass won her first world title in the women's 200m breaststroke. She triumphed with a championship record of 2:18.50 seconds. The silver went to Evgeniia Chikunova, while the bronze was shared between two swimmers - Kaylene Corbett and Alina Zmushka.
Hungarian Hubert Kos regained the world title in the 200m backstroke. The Olympic champion from Paris won the final with a new European record of 1:53.19. The podium was completed by Pieter Coetze (South Africa) and Yohann Ndoye-Brouard (France).
China, on the other hand, was jubilant in the men's 200m breaststroke. Qin Haiyang - the 26-year-old world record holder, rejoiced from the eighth lane. The silver medal was won by Japan's Ippei Watanabe, and third was Caspar Corbeau from the Netherlands. | BGNES
