TikTok plans to increase its investment in the United Kingdom, its largest community in Europe, by creating 500 more jobs.
This was announced by the Chinese social media giant, according to AFP.
The news coincided with the start of London Tech Week, where the British Prime Minister will welcome some of the biggest companies in the sector.
“TikTok's workforce in the United Kingdom will grow to 3,000 this year with the creation of more than 500 jobs,” the company said in a statement.
It added that it would invest in a new office in London, which would open next year and be larger than its current UK headquarters.
This will bring TikTok's investment in UK infrastructure to around £140 million ($190 million), the group said.
Around half of the UK population, more than 30 million people, use TikTok every month. This makes the platform “the largest consumer community in Europe,” the statement added.
"Whether it's direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the broader economic contribution of the millions of UK businesses on TikTok, we're delighted to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK," said Adam Presser, TikTok's UK director and global head of operations and trust and safety.
For years, TikTok has been targeted by Western governments over concerns that personal data could be used by China for espionage or propaganda.
“What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and creating a fun and safe digital space that sustainably supports creators, entrepreneurs, and the economy as a whole, which is why we are investing significantly in safety,” Presser added. | BGNES
