Charlize Theron, a naturalized U.S. citizen, said the administration's immigration policy is "destroying the lives of families, not criminals," The Hollywood Reporter reported.
During her annual Africa Outreach Project Block Party over the weekend, Theron thanked attendees for "taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world seems to be on fire."
"Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S. and around the world, we are moving backwards fast. Immigration policy is destroying the lives of families, not criminals; women's rights are becoming fewer every day; gay and transgender lives are increasingly erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise," Theron said.
The issue of immigration is a very personal one for the star, who immigrated from South Africa to the U.S. and became an American citizen in 2007.
Her party is being organized to raise funds to help youth in Africa. Theron spoke out against the "cuts in US aid that have brought HIV and AIDS programs in my homeland of South Africa to a complete standstill."
"All of this is not only harmful but dangerous; people will lose their lives - many have already lost their lives, unfortunately," she said. "It is absolutely heartbreaking to see this kind of unnecessary suffering."
"But what we see and what we cannot miss is the resistance. There is hope. There is strength in all of us standing up, organizing, protesting, voting, caring for each other and refusing to accept that this is the new normal," the actress added.
