Four dead in Manhattan shooting, fifth victim in critical condition

At least four people, including a police officer, were killed on July 28 after a gunman walked into a downtown Manhattan skyscraper and opened fire in broad daylight, AFP reported.

A fifth victim is also in critical condition after being shot, and the gunman apparently attempted to take his own life, Mayor Eric Adams said at a late-night briefing at a hospital near the scene of the shooting.

The shooter was captured on security camera footage exiting a black BMW carrying an M-4 rifle before entering the building and immediately opening fire on a police officer, then "spraying the lobby" with bullets, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.

The office block at 345 Park Avenue - home to hedge fund giant Blackstone, auditor KPMG and the National Football League - was apparently the shooter's target, Tisch said. She said the suspect is believed to have acted alone.

Tisch gave the shooter's name as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas and said a revolver, ammunition and magazines were found in his vehicle. She said Tamura had mental health issues.

The incident began around 6 p.m. (local time) when reports of gunfire prompted hundreds of police officers to raid a busy office district on famed Park Avenue, popular with tourists and businessmen.

Mayor Adams said the dead policeman, a Bangladeshi immigrant who was 36, was among the dead.

Two other men and a woman have died and another man remains in critical condition, officials said, without giving a preliminary motive for the shooting. | BGNES
