Spain expands investigation into Apple

The Spanish competition authority (CNMC) has expanded its investigation, which began last year, into the conditions that Apple imposes on developers of mobile applications offered on the App Store platform.

The investigation was initiated in July 2024 on suspicion of anti-competitive practices by the American technology giant. Apple is accused of imposing “unfair commercial conditions” on developers who distribute their applications through its online store.

The CNMC will now further investigate whether Apple imposed a specific pricing scheme that developers must follow in order to be able to publish their applications on the platform.

“This would constitute a restrictive commercial practice that limits competition between companies,” the regulator said in an official statement.

Apple said it would continue to work with the antitrust authority “to ensure that their positions and considerations are fully understood.”

“The App Store is designed to provide a safe and reliable environment for users and an excellent business opportunity for developers in Spain and around the world,” the company added.
Apple’s success is largely due to its closed ecosystem, centered around iPhone and iPad devices, where the company controls all aspects of its platform, citing the need for increased security and user convenience. However, this approach conflicts with European competition rules. | BGNES, AFP
