Natural gas leak at Athens airport temporarily halts traffic

After a routine check, authorities lifted traffic restrictions.

On August 26, during construction work in the old short-term parking area at Athens International Airport, a gas pipeline was ruptured.

Workers accidentally punctured the gas pipeline at around 3 p.m. while constructing a new multi-storey parking structure.

Airport authorities were notified immediately and, in cooperation with the traffic police, access to the arrivals road was temporarily blocked, according to the newspaper еKathimerini.

After a routine check, they lifted the traffic restrictions.

There were no reports of injuries and the airport continued to operate without further incident. Investigators are looking into the circumstances that led to the gas pipeline being punctured. | BGNES
