Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defended their mixed doubles title at the US Open after dramatically overcoming Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final of the revamped tournament 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.

The defending champions managed to break the resistance of the famous tandem after receiving a "wild card" for the competition, which prioritizes the singles rankings. Errani and Vavassori collected a check of $ 1 million for their victory.

"We have been doing something incredible in these last two years. We showed today that doubles is an exceptional product", said Vavassori, who triumphed with Errani at Roland Garros earlier this year.
