Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a bus stop in East Jerusalem, annexed by Israel, killing five people and injuring several others.
Israel’s emergency medical service Magen David Adom (MDA) reported five fatalities in the shooting, updating earlier information of four deaths. Police said the two gunmen were also killed, AFP reported.
MDA said that seven others were in serious condition.
Among the dead was one man “around 50 years old and three men around 30 years old,” according to an MDA statement, which added that several of the injured were receiving medical treatment.
The attack, which occurred late in the morning, took place at the Ramot junction on Yigal Street and left about 15 people injured, according to an earlier MDA statement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting to assess the situation following the shooting, his office announced.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas, which has been at war with Israel in Gaza for nearly two years, praised the attack, saying it was carried out by two Palestinian fighters.
“We confirm that this operation is a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and the genocide it commits against our people,” Hamas said in a statement.
Paramedic Fadi Dekaidek, who was at the scene, described the attack as “severe.”
“The injured were lying on the road and sidewalk near a bus stop, some of them unconscious,” he said.
Police said the attackers opened fire at the bus stop after arriving in a car.
A security officer and a civilian at the scene immediately responded, returning fire and neutralizing the assailants.
A police spokesperson noted that two attackers were involved, later confirming both had been declared dead at the scene. | BGNES
