Panasonic plans to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide, mainly in 2025

Japanese electronics giant Panasonic has announced that it is embarking on a restructuring that will result in the liquidation of loss-making businesses and the loss of 10,000 jobs worldwide, half of which will be in Japan.

The company will “optimize its global workforce,” with the operation “affecting 10,000 employees (5,000 in Japan and 5,000 overseas) in consolidated companies,” “mainly” by the 2025 financial year, which began in early April, according to a statement from the group.

At the end of March, Panasonic had around 228,400 employees. These cuts will be made “in accordance with the laws, regulations, and labor laws of each country and region.”

A pioneer in electronic devices, from rice cookers to VCRs, the Japanese group became a global giant in the manufacture of household appliances in the second half of the 20th century. Today, it is expanding its activities in the battery sector.

The group “will conduct a thorough review of the operational efficiency” of each branch and subsidiary, “reassess the number of organizations and personnel required,” and “promote the discontinuation of loss-making activities with no prospects for improving profitability, as well as the integration and closure of facilities.”

Thanks to these restructuring efforts, Panasonic intends to improve its profits by at least 150 billion yen (918 million euros), of which 70 billion will come from “staff optimisation”. However, this does not take into account the impact of US tariffs. | BGNES
