Rapper Cardi B was acquitted in a $24 million civil lawsuit in which she was accused of scratching a woman’s face with her nails, AFP reported.
Last week in Los Angeles, a high-profile hearing took place, during which the “WAP” star appeared in various wigs and sharply clashed with attorneys, creating several viral moments on social media.
A jury in the city rejected the claims of plaintiff Emani Ellis, who alleged that the singer attacked her in 2018 in Beverly Hills while she was pregnant and on her way to a medical appointment.
Ellis, who is African American, stated that Cardi B, also African American, shouted racist insults at her, spat on her, and scratched her face with her long nails. The “No Limit” star, now 32, testified that Ellis had approached her aggressively and attempted to film her with a phone outside the doctor’s office.
Cardi B’s attorneys noted that at the time, she was in the fourth month of her first pregnancy and was making significant efforts to keep it private from tabloids and critics. According to them, Ellis tried to intimidate her, and the situation escalated into a heated verbal exchange, which was broken up by medical center staff.
The jury dismissed the claim for damages. Following the verdict, Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, stated that she never assaulted Ellis.
“I swear to God, I’ll say it on my deathbed—I never touched this woman. I did not touch her,” she said.
“With that said, this time I’m going to be nice. But the next person who files a baseless lawsuit against me will get a counterclaim and pay up. Never think that you can sue me, and I’ll settle with you and give you money—that will not happen.” | BGNES
