If you’re looking for carbohydrates that are good for your digestive health, nutritionists recommend chickpeas, writes Eatingwell.

They’re packed with gut-healthy properties, and they’re rich in fiber, which plays a key role in maintaining digestive health by regulating bowel movements and promoting the growth of good bacteria in the gut.

Just half a cup of cooked chickpeas contains 6 grams of fiber. Chickpeas contain two different types of fiber—soluble and insoluble—but each promotes gut health in a different way.

For example, soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a gel-like substance that helps slow down digestion and promote nutrient absorption.

Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, adds bulk to stool, preventing constipation. This dual action promotes balanced gut flora and improves overall digestive efficiency.

Chickpeas nourish beneficial gut bacteria "Chickpeas are rich in resistant starch, which nourishes beneficial gut bacteria and stimulates the production of short-chain fatty acids," reveals nutritionist Jaime Bachtel-Shelbert. | BGNES, AFP
