Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will hold “important” talks with his key ally Vladimir Putin today, 48 hours after a massive US attack on key nuclear facilities in Iran.
Moscow is an important supporter of Tehran, but has not come out strongly in support of its partner since Israel launched a wave of attacks on June 13 that prompted Iran to respond with missiles and drones.
While condemning the Israeli and US strikes, Russia did not offer military assistance and downplayed its obligations under the broad strategic partnership it signed with Tehran just a few months ago.
“In this new dangerous situation, our consultations with Russia can certainly be of great importance,” Araghchi said after landing in Moscow, according to Russian state media quoted by AFP.
The official news agency IRNA reported that Araghchi would “hold consultations with the president and other senior officials of Russia on regional and international developments following the military aggression of the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran.”
Putin initially presented himself as a possible mediator between Iran and Israel, but on June 20, he said he was only “offering ideas” after US President Donald Trump rejected the Russian leader's role.
“We are in no way seeking to act as a mediator, we are simply offering ideas,” Putin stressed at an economic forum in St. Petersburg.
“If they prove attractive to both sides, we will be delighted,” he added.
On June 21, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the US strikes as “irresponsible” after earlier warning of military intervention. | BGNES
