Football world bid farewell to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva

They lost their lives in a tragic road accident.

Family, friends, former and current teammates, people from football and beyond came to the funeral of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, BGNES reported.

They left this world in a tragic road accident after their Lamborghini caught fire after a flat tyre while trying to overtake in the early hours of Thursday. Jota and Silva left this world at the age of 28 and 25, respectively. 11 days before the accident, Jota had married his longtime girlfriend Rute Cardoso. Yesterday, thousands flocked to their wake at the São Cosme chapel in the town of Gondomar, which is near Porto.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson wore wreaths with the numbers 20 and 30 respectively today. The 20 is the number of the late Jota and a number that will be retired by the Reds in tribute to the Portuguese, who played at Anfield for the past five years, while the other is his brother's.

Jota's remaining team-mates in the English champions were also present, led by manager Arne Slot. Some of the former Liverpool players were also spotted there, including Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. Many of Jota's and his brother Silva's compatriots also came to the funeral - Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Moutinho, as well as Ruben Neves, who flew from the United States to Portugal immediately after his Al Hilal's quarter-final clash with Fluminense.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, and Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença also attended the ceremony, which began at around 12:30 p.m.

Earlier today, Liverpool announced that they would pay the remainder of Jota's salary - £140,000 a week until the summer of 2027, to his family. | BGNES
