Stefanos Tsitsipas was surprisingly eliminated in the second round of one of his favorite tournaments - Roland Garros. The 2021 finalist in Paris lost to world No. 167 Matteo Gigante of Italy 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 in over three hours of play.
Tsitsipas, ranked 20th in the world, fell behind after a single break in the opening set. In the second, he took advantage, but conceded a rebreak before recovering and leveling the score. From then on, however, the 23-year-old Gigante showed composure in crucial moments to achieve the biggest victory of his career. His reward is a place in the third round, where he awaits the rested Ben Shelton. The American had a five-set opener against Lorenzo Sonego and did not play in the second round due to the withdrawal of Hugo Gaston.
Shelton's compatriot, No. 12 Tommy Paul, had to make a complete turnaround from 0-2 down against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary. Paul found himself in a tough spot after 4-6, 2-6, but took the next three sets to advance and play Karen Khachanov.
An all-American clash took shape between Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda after their victories over Pablo Carreno Busta and Jenson Brooksby, respectively. No. 10 Holger Rune dealt with American Emilio Nava, and Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the next opponent for defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. | BGNES
