Trump insists Iran's nuclear program has been set back “decades”

President Donald Trump insisted that the US strikes had led to the “total destruction” of Iran's nuclear capabilities and set back the country's nuclear program by “decades,” while Israel said it was still too early to fully assess the damage.

During the 12-day conflict, Israel bombed Iranian nuclear and military sites, while Iran fired waves of missiles at its enemy in their deadliest battle yet.

The United States joined the conflict in support of its ally, striking two nuclear facilities with powerful bunker-busting bombs over the weekend, while a submarine-launched missile struck a third.

But leaked US intelligence info casts doubt on the damage caused by the US strikes, saying they only slowed down Tehran's nuclear program by a few months.

“They won't be building bombs for a long time,” Trump boasted, adding that the strikes had set the program back ‘decades’ and that the truce he had announced between Iran and Israel was “going very well.”

Earlier, the Israeli military command warned that it was “too early” to assess the damage to Iran's nuclear program, AFP reported.

“I believe we have dealt a significant blow to the nuclear program and I can say that we have set it back by several years,” Israeli military spokesman Brigadier General Efrat said.

Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir said Israel and the US had set back Iran's nuclear program “by years.”

However, US media quoted sources familiar with the Military Intelligence Agency report as saying that the US strikes did not completely destroy Iran's centrifuges or enriched uranium stocks.

According to the report, the strikes blocked the entrances to some facilities without destroying the underground buildings.

Israel claims that the bombings, which began on June 13, were intended to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, an ambition that Tehran has consistently denied.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an address to the nation after the ceasefire, announced that “we have thwarted Iran's nuclear project.”

“And if anyone in Iran tries to rebuild it, we will act with the same determination and intensity to thwart any attempt,” he concluded. | BGNES
