Hollywood star Halle Berry has admitted that she will not be able to wear her chosen dress at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival due to new dress code rules.
The American actress is a member of the jury that will decide which film will win the Palme d'Or. She said she would probably find herself in conflict with the new rules banning nudity on the red carpet, as well as extravagant dresses, AFP reported.
"I had an incredible Gupta dress for tonight, but I can't wear it because the train is too long," said the Oscar winner, referring to Indian designer Gaurva Gupta, who previously dressed rapper Cardi B and made large dresses for the Met Gala.
"Of course, I will follow the rules. So I had to make a change," she explained.
Others, however, clearly did not.
German model Heidi Klum appeared with a pink train at least three meters long on the festival's first red carpet, and Chinese actress and influencer Wang Qianghui also wore a huge white taffeta gown.
Berry, however, supported the festival organizers in their fight against overly risky outfits with new written rules.
"The nudity part is probably a good rule too," said the star of "Monster's Ball."
The Cannes festival organizers surprised everyone by publicly presenting their dress code rules in writing for the first time.
"It's not about regulating" what people wear, but about "prohibiting full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with French law," a spokesperson said.
Over the years, the red carpet in Cannes has witnessed a series of daring and revealing looks. In 2021, model Bella Hadid caused a stir on social media with a revealing sculptural dress by Schiaparelli. | BGNES
