Universal's How to Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) is on track to become a global hit with revenues of just over $200 million, surpassing pre-weekend forecasts, Deadline reported. As of yesterday, the film, which is an adaptation of the popular animated series, had grossed $54.9 million at the international box office, including $29.1 million from advance screenings. Taking into account the forecasts for the US, the start looks like $200.4 million worldwide.
With such a result on the global market, Hiccup and Toothless will be able to boast fourth place in the ranking of the most successful premieres of the year so far, after Minecraft: The Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and the Chinese Ne Zha 2. This will also be the seventh most successful remake of a feature film (after The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Lilo & Stitch, The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, and Aladdin).
Directed by Dean DeBlois, "HTTYD" is being screened in 81 foreign markets and is on track to gross around $117.7 million this season, including preview screenings that began last weekend. This will make the film, starring Gerard Butler, the fourth biggest international box office hit of the year among Hollywood films (after "Lilo," "Minecraft," and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning").
It will also make it the sixth most successful international launch of a live-action remake (after "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "Lilo & Stitch," "The Jungle Book," and "Aladdin").
In terms of individual markets, Mexico opened with $2.3 million, reaching $4.4 million, including preview screenings. Screened on 3,765 screens, the film is the clear number one at the box office with a 68% share.
In the UK and Ireland, the film grossed $4.8 million, including $3.3 million from preview screenings during the week. The film grossed $1.5 million on 2,000 screens, making it Universal's fourth most successful debut of the year in that market.
In China, where there were no preview screenings, the film opened on 35,000 screens with $2.3 million for the day, taking first place with a 44% market share. While not a huge figure, it is still good enough for the most successful opening day for a book-based feature film in the last five years and is in line with Inside Out 2, above The Lion King and more than double Wonder Woman 1984. The result in the Maoyan rating is high at 9.5.
Brazil added $689,000 in first place, bringing the total revenue to $4.9 million, including the five days of previews. The gross revenue is equal to that of "Mufasa" and above "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," and "Sonic 3."
By Friday, Korea had reached $5.3 million, including preview screenings, and a fantastic 99% rating on CVG Egg. The revenue to date has already surpassed that of The Little Mermaid and Mufasa for their entire lifetime.
HTTYD is also number one in France ($2.8 million); Germany ($2.4 million); Australia ($1.5 million), Spain ($2 million); Italy ($1.4 million); and Thailand ($1.1 million – the biggest premiere of 2025). |BGNES
