Rapper Tory Lanez was attacked in a US prison

Prison authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, working in conjunction with the Kern County District Attorney's Office, they said.

Rapper Tory Lanez, who was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, was hospitalized after an attack in a California prison, authorities said, according to AFP.

Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was taken to hospital after being attacked early in the morning by another inmate at the Tehachapi prison, 110 kilometers north of Los Angeles.

There is no official comment on the severity of his injuries, but entertainment website TMZ, citing sources, said he is expected to survive the attack, which it said involved a knife.

"At approximately 7:20 a.m. today, Daystar Peterson was attacked by another inmate in a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi," the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.

"Staff responded immediately, activated 911, and began providing medical assistance. Peterson was transported to a medical facility outside the prison for further treatment."

Prison authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, working in conjunction with the Kern County District Attorney's Office, they said.

In 2023, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a widely publicized trial in Los Angeles, in which he denied shooting Megan Thee Stallion.

The jury heard how the Canadian rapper ordered the "Savage" star to dance while he shot her multiple times in the legs.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pitt, was in a car with Lanez, his bodyguard, and her friend Kelsey Harris after a party at Kylie Jenner's luxury home in July 2020.

She and Lanez had been in a romantic relationship in the months leading up to the incident.

Harris, who only found out about the sexual relationship that evening, was in love with Lanez, as she stated in court, and an argument broke out in the car, during which Megan Thee Stallion asked to be let out of the vehicle.

The "Hot Girl Summer" singer said she suffered injuries to her legs that made it difficult for her to walk after the attack. |BGNES
