Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he will meet with US President Donald Trump at next week's G7 summit in Canada, where he plans to discuss trade tariffs and the defense pact that Washington has put up for review, AFP reported.
The G7 meeting, which begins in the Canadian town of Kananaskis in the Canadian Rockies, is the first major global meeting of Trump's second term.
"We have a meeting scheduled," Albanese told reporters, adding that he expected a "constructive dialogue."
"We will raise the issue of tariffs, we will emphasize the importance of AUKUS, and we will have a discussion as befits two friends," he said from Seattle while traveling to the G7 meeting.
The 2021 AUKUS agreement brings together Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States in a multi-year effort to counterbalance China's growing military power.
The agreement aims to arm Australia with a fleet of state-of-the-art nuclear submarines from the US and provides for cooperation in the development of a range of military technologies.
The Trump administration put the agreement under review last week, but Australian officials said this was "completely natural for a new administration."
"The context of the AUKUS discussions will be Australia's contribution and the potential for AUKUS to deliver a range of benefits to the United States," he said.
Australia, a close ally of the US, was hit with a 10 percent tariff on goods exported to the United States, rising to 50 percent on steel and aluminum, as part of Trump's sweeping global tariffs.
"I will represent Australia's interests with respect because it is also in the US's interest that Australia be treated appropriately," Albanese added. |BGNES
