Cambodia has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his role in the recent truce with Thailand, according to an official statement.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet sent an official letter with the nomination to the Norwegian Nobel Committee for President Trump's mediation efforts, the Anadolu Agency reported.
"This nomination reflects not only my gratitude, but also the sincere gratitude of the Cambodian people," Hun Manet wrote in the letter sent today from Phnom Penh.
He praised Trump's "exceptional statesmanship" and his commitment to resolving the conflict, noting that he has "achieved remarkable success in reducing tensions in some of the world's most volatile regions."
Relations between Thailand and Cambodia have deteriorated in recent weeks, with tensions escalating into days of cross-border air strikes and rocket fire that killed and wounded dozens of people before ending in a truce on July 28.
Earlier, Trump spoke with the prime ministers of both countries, urging them to cease military action and warning them that continued conflict could jeopardize their trade agreements with the US.
The US president spoke to them again to congratulate the two neighbors on the ceasefire agreement.
In June, Pakistan also announced that Islamabad would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in achieving a ceasefire with India after cross-border rocket attacks in May.
Later in July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. | BGNES
