The friendship between Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift has been going strong for almost two decades now, and it turns out that it was born out of the most understandable of circumstances – teenage heartbreak.
Selena talked about her friendship with Taylor during an interview on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast and explained how the Jonas Brothers inadvertently brought them together.
"I was dating Nick, and she was dating Joe. And it was all—it was sweet, we were young. Now we all know and love each other, and it's so sweet. We don't know what we were doing — she and I like to say that the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other, because it was really sweet," she shared.
In 2008, then-15-year-old Selena briefly dated Nick Jonas, while 18-year-old Taylor dated Joe. The latter relationship reportedly lasted only a few months, but that was enough to inspire a number of songs, such as "Mr Perfectly Fine," and Joe even apologized for that infamous 25-second breakup call in 2023.
Discussing how their teenage relationships brought them together, Gomez shared that she and Swift immediately hit it off, and the rest, as they say, is history.
"It was crazy curly-haired Taylor wearing all these bracelets that went all the way up to her shoulders. I think 'Love Story' was the first song she played for me. It hadn't come out yet. I was in a hotel room and I remember it very clearly. It was one of those songs that I heard and immediately thought, 'This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard,'" she said.
Although her romantic relationships with Nick and Joe from the Jonas Brothers were short-lived, Selena said the two "got closer after the breakup, like girls do," but that wasn't the end. "And then we just stayed together through all the ups and downs that followed, and here we are now, 16 years later," she added. | BGNES
