Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the country's president ahead of his upcoming visit to Washington. The talks between the two focused on the war in Gaza and efforts to expand relations with Arab countries, the presidency said.

Netanyahu is expected to arrive at the White House on Monday for talks with US President Donald Trump, who is trying to end the 21-month war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.

Indirect talks were to resume in Doha on Sunday, brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States.

"The prime minister brings with him an important mission to Washington - to move forward with an agreement to return all our hostages home," President Isaac Herzog said in an official statement.

"This is a supreme moral duty. I fully support these efforts, even when they require difficult, complex and painful decisions. We must all remember that the price is not small," he added.

Two Palestinian sources familiar with the talks told AFP that the proposal includes a 60-day truce in which Hamas would release 10 live hostages and return several bodies in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. | BGNES, AFP
