Iga Swiatek suffered an unexpected defeat in the round of 16 of the Montreal tennis tournament. The Wimbledon champion was defeated by 16th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark 6-7 (1), 3-6 in almost two hours of play.
Swiatek, second-seeded, remained the highest-ranked player after the elimination of Coco Gauff. However, she did not take advantage of the chance for a new title, as she had an inspired Tauson against her, who once again demonstrated that she is a very serious tennis player. The Scandinavian started strongly and led with a break and 3-1, before Swiatek gradually put pressure on her. Tauson saved seven break points before eventually losing her serve in the tenth game of the opening set. However, the Dane was ruthless in the tiebreak, winning 7-1 points. In the second set, Tauson pulled ahead 4-1, Swiatek made a re-break, but cracked immediately and this time could not stay in the match. Thus, Tauson avenged her loss to the Pole at Wimbledon, where she was decisively outplayed in the round of 16.
The representative of Denmark will face the Australian Open champion Madison Keys, who beat Karolina Muchova in three sets.
Naomi Osaka defeated convincingly Anastasija Sevastova, who eliminated two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula, by giving only one game to the Latvian. The Japanese will face the impressively playing Elina Svitolina, who took the scalp of last year's finalist Amanda Anisimova.
Victoria Mboko - Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Marta Kostyuk - Elena Rybakina are the other two quarterfinals. | BGNES
