The story of 18-year-old Victoria Mboko has a happy ending. The Canadian triumphed at the Montreal tennis tournament to the great joy of the local audience. In the final, she defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
This was her fourth victory over a Slam champion after those over Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina. Only one tennis player has achieved such a series at a younger age than Mboko, and that was Serena Williams in 1999.
For Mboko, this is her first WTA trophy. It seemed even more unthinkable at the beginning of the year, when she was No. 333 in the world.
“It was an incredible week in Montreal. I want to thank Naomi for the great match. I have been watching her matches since I was little. It was an incredible honor to play against her,” Mboko commented during the award ceremony.
"I also want to thank every single person who came to support me during the tournament. You guys were amazing. I couldn't be more grateful," the teenager added.
After this tournament, Victoria Mboko climbed to 34th place in the world. After the match, she said that she would not participate in Cincinnati, but we will see her at the US Open, in about a month. | BGNES
