Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime guitarist, Zakk Wylde, revealed the touching final text message he received from the legendary metal vocalist following Black Sabbath’s farewell concert, Page Six reported.
“The last message I got from Ozzy was, ‘Zakkie, sorry, it was madness back there. I didn’t see you.’ Then he added, ‘Thanks for everything,’” Wylde shared in an interview with Guitar World. “We were just saying, ‘Love you, buddy.’ That was it.”
In the interview, the guitarist — who joined Black Sabbath in 1987 — said he had expected to see Ozzy, who passed away on July 22 at the age of 76, after the band’s farewell show in Birmingham on July 5, but that meeting never happened.
Wylde explained that he had wanted to give the “Prince of Darkness” some peace after the chaos backstage. “Everyone and their mothers were in the dressing room, and I just wanted to give him a break,” said the guitarist, adding that their main concern was “making sure Ozzy was okay.”
“It was really amazing. The last time I saw Ozzy was on stage after the Sabbath show ended,” Wylde recalled.
The 58-year-old musician also shared how close his relationship was with the band’s frontman. “Ozzy was just the best. I have a father who’s a World War II veteran, and Ozzy was almost like an older brother,” Wylde said.
“There was nearly a 20-year age gap between us. Our relationship was full of laughs and drinking, but if I ever needed advice, I could talk to him.”
Their families were so close that Ozzy held a special title. “Ozzy is the godfather of our oldest son,” the guitarist noted. “It didn’t matter if I was playing with him or not — if Sharon called me and said, ‘Can you house-sit while we’re on a business trip?’ I’d do it. Even if I had to bring milk and eggs over, I’d do it.”
The legendary rocker passed away last week after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and complications from a 2003 ATV accident. His death was announced by his wife Sharon Osbourne and their children.
“With more sorrow than words can express, we share that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne passed away this morning,” the statement read.
“He was surrounded by his family and wrapped in love. We kindly ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
