Belgrade police repeatedly use tear gas against protesters

Thousands of Serbs are protesting against Aleksandar Vucic's regime under the slogan "tonight it's bursting at the seams", BGNES reported.

Thousands of Serbians are protesting against the regime of Aleksandar Vučić under the slogan “Tonight we’re bursting at the seams,” BGNES reported.

In New Belgrade, police repeatedly used tear gas to disperse the crowd, forcing people to retreat. In the area around the General Staff in the Serbian capital, pyrotechnics were fired. The Gendarmerie pushed the protesters toward the Serbian government building, while government activists remained positioned in front of the party offices on the same street. Groups of masked men with clubs, who according to the opposition are government supporters, appeared among the crowd. Students warned that the regime is trying to provoke clashes.

In Novi Sad, the windows of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) offices were smashed. Some protesters then entered the building and took out chairs, cartons of eggs, water, and other items. The collected eggs were thrown at the building, and later the facade was splashed with red and white paint.

Demonstrators also gathered in front of the SNS building in Leskovac to protest against the government, chanting slogans such as: “Your hands are stained with blood,” “Call elections,” “Who are you protecting?” and “Arrest Vučić.” The building was guarded by a police cordon. The protest was peaceful, in contrast to demonstrations in some other cities in recent days, where there had been clashes with police and arrests of participants.

Citizens gathered in front of the City Council building in Niš, where, according to them, “in the dead of night” the new mayor Dragoslav Pavlović was elected. They recalled that the previous evening he had shouted “Ustaše” at them. The crowd then moved toward the District Court and planned to proceed to the SNS offices. Students called on fellow citizens to join the protest with the slogan: “Everyone bring one egg—because that gives us strength!” They reported that “not even a minute” had passed since announcing their intention to march to the ruling party’s office when three police vans arrived in front of the building. Earlier, citizens had pelted the gendarmerie with eggs and chanted for them to lower their shields.

On Student Square in Kragujevac, protesters gathered chanting “The people will not tolerate evil.” In Smederevo, a march was held through the central streets of the city.

Protests are also taking place in Gornji Milanovac, Šabac, Negotin, Aranđelovac, Kraljevo, Vrbas, Sombor, and other towns.

Students, quoted by N1 television and the daily Danas, reported that officers from the Security and Information Agency (BIA) have been “visiting” their fellow students at their home addresses.

The Freedom and Justice Party announced on social network X that its MP, Peđa Mitrović, had been beaten during the protest in Belgrade. | BGNES
