Djordje Simion told the Financial Times: if I become president, I will appoint Djordjesku as PM

Simion's rival in the second round is expected to try to form an alliance of all major forces to defeat him, but may face difficulties in doing so.

The winner of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, Giorgio Simion, told the Financial Times that if elected president he would appoint Calin Giurgescu as prime minister.

"In a democracy you leave it to the people to decide. So as president I can change the members of the Constitutional Court, the members of the secret services, so that I can ensure fair elections and be a mediator to find a majority in parliament. So we can think about him being prime minister," Simion said.

BGNES recalls that Giurgescu won the first round of the presidential elections in late 2024, but the Romanian constitutional court annulled the vote based on intelligence reports that the election was influenced by Russia.

Simion's rival in the second round is expected to try to form an alliance of all major forces to defeat him, but may face difficulties in doing so.

"I'm not too worried about such an alliance. It's just a smokescreen, a distraction, I'm not the extremist, the bully, the isolationist that I'm portrayed as," Simion said. | BGNES
