US President Donald Trump responded ‘Oh, no problem’ to a question about his public breakup with his former ally and donor Elon Musk, Politico reported.
White House aides have scheduled a call with Musk on Friday, 6 June, in hopes of calming the situation.
The unexpected political marriage between Trump and Musk fell apart in a stormy public divorce, with the American president threatening to strip the billionaire of his huge government contracts.
Trump said in a statement from the Oval Office that he was ‘very disappointed’ after his former adviser and major donor criticised the ‘big and beautiful’ budget bill presented to Congress.
The two traded insults on social media, with Musk, who was Trump's biggest campaign donor with $300 million, saying the Republican would not win the 2024 election without his support.
Trump, however, downplayed the feud during a brief interview with Politico.
‘Everything is going very well, it's never been better,’ he said, before going on to boast about his approval ratings among Americans.
The dispute could have serious political and economic consequences, as shares in Musk's car company Tesla plummeted and the South African-born tech mogul vowed to end an important US space programme. | BGNES
