On Sunday night, protest rallies were organized in several Serbian cities for the sixth consecutive night.
In Niš, the protest began in front of the police station over the arrest of four students who participated in previous demonstrations. The protesters were unable to reach the building due to a police cordon and a strong presence of the gendarmerie. The crowd chanted "Let our children go" and "Arrest Vucic" at the law enforcement officers.
In Novi Sad, people gathered in front of the Rectorate building on the student campus, and earlier in the day - in front of the courthouse. There, the cause of dissatisfaction was the interrogation of six detainees for attacking members of the "Cobra" special forces during the protests on Wednesday. They are accused of "attempted aggravated murder".
The protests have been going on for the sixth night and are often accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and police. They are a reaction to incidents in Vrbas and Bačka Palanka, when government supporters attacked protesters, while the police, according to citizens, did nothing to prevent the attacks.
President Aleksandar Vučić announced on August 17 that in the next “three or four days” the state would take “surprising decisions” in response to the protests.
Protests have been ongoing in Serbia for over nine months following the tragedy in Novi Sad, when a canopy collapsed at the recently reconstructed railway station on November 1, killing 16 people. This was the reason for mass demonstrations.
The students’ latest demand is to hold early elections. | BGNES
