The horror movie Weapons held onto its leading position at the North American box office, bringing in another $25 million in ticket sales over the weekend. The Warner Bros. production, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of a group of students from the same class. Analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research called it a “strong” second-week performance, especially against the backdrop of a relatively weak summer for cinemas in the United States and Canada.
In second place remained Disney’s long-awaited sequel Freakier Friday, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, which grossed $14.5 million. Debuting in third was Universal’s action film Nobody 2, starring Bob Odenkirk, which earned $9.3 million. “Critics like the story of a hitman trying to take a vacation with his family, only to get caught up in trouble. Reviews and audience scores are both excellent,” Gross noted.
Disney’s reboot of the Marvel franchise, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, dropped to fourth place with $8.8 million. The film stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the superhero team facing off against the menacing Galactus in a retro-futuristic world.
Rounding out the top five was Universal’s animated sequel The Bad Guys 2, which brought in $7.5 million. | BGNES, AFP
