"Serbian Lady Gaga"’s concerts canceled due to her support for Vučić

Serbian pop-folk singer and media personality Jelena Karleusa, known as the "Serbian Lady Gaga," saw two of her latest concerts canceled due to public outrage, BGNES reported.

One of her concerts was interrupted in Loznica, while the other, in Valjevo, did not take place at all.

The disturbances come amid growing criticism of her for her open support for President Aleksandar Vučić and calls for police violence against protesting students.

Last week, on August 15, Carleusa's performance in Loznica was interrupted by demonstrators.

The concert, which lasted less than an hour, ended with police in riot gear and private security guards evacuating the singer, and according to reports, pepper spray was used against citizens outside the cordoned-off area.

Witnesses said that more people had gathered to protest against the concert than to attend it.

The next day in Valjevo, where another concert was planned, Carolee did not show up at all.

Opposition figures said it would be inappropriate for her to appear in a city where dozens of young people had recently been beaten and arrested during demonstrations.

Instead, the singer announced that she was planning a "spectacle" in Vranje, which would be attended by 100,000 people – a figure that critics dismissed as unrealistic for a town with a population of around 55,000.

Carolee's presence at these state-funded events has been strongly condemned by opposition politicians, activists, and citizens who consider her part of the government's propaganda machine.

Critics point to her public statements calling on the police to use violence against demonstrators, her verbal attacks on students, and what they describe as hate speech.

They claim that her concerts are a "bread and circuses" tactic funded by local budgets at a time of heightened public unrest.

After the concert in Loznica, Karleusa accused protesters of "attacking women and children," while her critics responded that her rhetoric had fueled the violence now seen on the streets.

BGNES recalls that protests have been ongoing in Serbia for over nine months following the tragedy in Novi Sad, when 16 people were killed on November 1 when a canopy collapsed at a recently renovated railway station. This sparked mass demonstrations.
