Unique props from Downton Abbey to be auctioned in the UK

The "farewell" auction exhibition will begin next month.

Fans of Downton Abbey will be able to bid on props, costumes, and other items from the hit television series and films. The "farewell" auction exhibition will begin next month.

The sale by London auction house Bonhams, which will include everything from dresses to a film clapperboard, will take place online for just under a month, starting on August 18.

It precedes the release of the third film, "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale," in theaters in September and follows the six highly successful seasons of the series on the small screen, AFP reported.

Bonhams is marking the event with a free "special exhibition" at its New Bond Street store in the British capital, which is open to all and showcases some of the items that will be sold, the statement said.

"Downton Abbey is an exceptionally well-researched story about aristocratic society in the early 20th century," said Charlie Thomas of Bonhams in a statement announcing the sale and accompanying exhibition.

"The costumes and props show the impressive attention to detail that brought the world to life on screen and made it so beloved by millions of people around the world," he said.

Among the more expensive items to be auctioned is the "bell wall" from Downton Abbey, the system for summoning servants that played an important role in the television series. It is expected to sell for up to £7,000 ($9,400).

Various dresses will be offered, including the wedding dress worn by Lady Mary Crawley — played by actress Michelle Dockery — in the first episode of the third season, priced at £3,000 to £5,000.

Meanwhile, the clapperboard used in the production of the film "Downton Abbey: A New Era" is expected to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500, and the autographed script of the first episode of the first season is expected to fetch between £600 and £800. | BGNES
