Constitutional changes are the condition for starting real negotiations for North Macedonia to join the European Union.

This was stated by MEP Thomas Waitz, who prepared the European Parliament report on the country, BGNES reported.

"The report shows the support of the majority in the EP for the European integration of North Macedonia. The report does not give any reason not to accept the constitutional amendments. This is the agreement signed between North Maceodonia and the European Union," Waitz emphasized.

He explained that the objections of the Bulgarian MEPs in the process of preparing the report and the deletion of the wording "Macedonian language and identity" in its final version should not be used as a reason to stop the process of constitutional amendments.

"I hope that the government of North Macedonia will fulfill the necessary conditions," Weitz also said.

The rapporteur stated that he was attacked and a smear campaign was carried out against him. His phone number was leaked to Telegram far-right groups in Bulgaria, from where he received threats.

The European Parliament resolution, based on the report by Thomas Weitz, directly emphasizes the danger of a “Serbian World” that undermines the sovereignty of North Macedonia and the region, and “representatives of the government in Skopje support and promote it.”

BGNES reminds that this geopolitical project of Belgrade is not only economic, but also aims to destabilize and change the state borders in the region, including Republika Srpska, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia. | BGNES
