Marilyn Monroe is considered one of the greatest sex symbols of the 20th century. Even 63 years after her death, she is still highly regarded in the entertainment industry, inspiring films and documentaries. Her beauty and glamour remain an important part of pop culture, and her image can often be seen on clothing, posters and other merchandise.
This year she would have turned 100. Few Hollywood stars have created such a strong legacy based on such a small and short career: starring roles in 11 films released within 9 years.
Marilyn Monroe's iconic career has left a lasting legacy in Hollywood, but the final moments of her life were tragic.
While the actress, born Norma Jean Mortonson, won the hearts of millions during her short stay in the spotlight, behind the scenes she suffered. In 1961 spent some time in a psychiatric clinic, which had a "very bad effect" on her.
The last day of Monroe's life - August 4, 1962 - is still shrouded in mystery. At the time, she was under the constant care of a doctor and a psychiatrist, who prescribed her numerous medications to treat mental problems, as well as insomnia. Unfortunately, despite efforts to care for the star, she overdosed on the prescribed medications, ending her life far too soon.
Monroe died on August 5, 1962, and the medical examiner ultimately ruled the cause of death to be "acute barbiturate intoxication," the result of "probable suicide." Laurence Olivier, her partner and director of The Prince and the Showgirl, said: "She was a victim of the sensationalism and the hype around her." An Albany Times-Union article said, “It’s hard to understand how a girl so loved by so many could be so lonely.”
But, as always, the audience had the final say. A week after her death, Variety magazine published the results of a survey of audience reaction by Creative Research Associates of Chicago. Men and women liked her equally, describing her as a sex symbol “possessed of innocence and a lack of awareness of her physical gifts.” Of the films she starred in (or had supporting roles in), respondents predicted that she would be best remembered for Some Like It Hot, The Seven Year Itch, and How to Marry a Millionaire.
In the decades since her career peaked, Marilyn Monroe has been the subject of documentaries, feature films, books, and television series, including the 2015 miniseries The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe. and the 2022 biographical film "Blonde" | BGNES
