James Trafford has joined Manchester City from Burnley in a deal the Premier League newly-promoted team said is a record fee for a British goalkeeper. The Citizens will pay £27m but the deal is worth £31m.
City had a matching clause in Trafford's contract when they sold him to Burnley in 2023. Newcastle signed the keeper for £31m last week but Manchester City met that fee. In addition, the Sky Blues have a buy-out clause, meaning they are paying £4m less.
The record for a British goalkeeper was held by long-serving Everton keeper Jordan Pickford - £30m when the England international joined the Toffees from Sunderland.
Trafford has signed a five-year deal with City, with the option of a further season, and will compete with Ederson for the starting spot under Pep Guardiola. He is the sixth new signing for the Citizens this summer after Tijani Reinders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Sverre Nypan and another goalkeeper - Marcus Bettinelli. | BGNES
