The number of victims from the latest Russian attack (on July 31) against the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has risen to 31. This marks one of the deadliest assaults on the capital since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, according to the Kyiv Independent.
“Unfortunately, as of now, 31 people have been killed, including 5 children. The youngest was just two years old,” President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media, adding that the number of injured has reached 159.
Among the victims is Senior Lieutenant Liliya Stepanchuk, a patrol police officer who had served with the Kyiv police since 2017. Her body was recovered from the rubble in the Sviatoshynskyi district during rescue operations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
The injured include three police officers and twelve children. Thirty people, including five children, remained hospitalized as of 2:40 p.m. local time on July 31, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Emergency services continue working at the sites of the attacks.
Klitschko noted that the number of injured children is the highest recorded in the city since the start of the full-scale invasion.
In response to the attack, August 1 has been declared a day of mourning in Kyiv. Flags will be flown at half-mast on all municipal buildings, and all entertainment events in the city have been banned for the day.
The attack came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Russia within ten days if the Kremlin does not agree to halt its full-scale war against Ukraine. | BGNES
